Dragon’s Castle

Jet lag hurts…but this face, sleeping soundly, is totally worth the pain.

Steffi and her lovely father, Karl, met us early this morning and we all drove to Schloss Drachenburg (“Dragon’s Castle”) on the Drachenfels hill in Königswinter. Had to take two cars, of course, as there are not many here that fit 5+ people. Sean enjoyed the speed limit (or lack-there-of) on the Autobahn. The weather was warm but a bit drizzly – very much like Seattle this time of year.

We rode a train to the top of the hill for a spectacular view and then walked 600 meters down a hiking trail to where the castle sits. Gorgeous architecture and landscaping all around!

After our tour, we had lunch nearby in the center of Königswinter. The kids were happy with pizza…we were happy with beer.

Arrived back at 6pm just in time to quickly walk to Altstadt (The Old Town) to watch the very important Germany vs. Slovakia match. Flags are flying out windows and on cars and the streets are filled with supporters wearing jerseys and black/yellow/red hats, wigs and necklaces all the time. We watched on the large screen outside with a crowd – front row on the cobblestone street. It was altogether pretty tame as Germany handled Slovakia with ease. “Gewinnen” was the chant, you know the result. Deutschland!

Family travel tip #1: If your plan includes different climates stack clothes in order of appearance…cold weather and rain first = jackets and umbrellas on top. Sigh…
